Chandigarh: North India is set for a significant weather shift as a series of western disturbances sweep across the region, bringing cold waves, rain, snowfall, and thunderstorms. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued warnings for several states, including Punjab, Haryana, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, and Kashmir.

In Punjab and Haryana, the severe cold persists, with temperatures remaining well below seasonal averages. On Wednesday, many areas recorded biting cold conditions, and the cold wave is expected to continue over the next few days. Light to moderate rainfall is predicted due to the western disturbance, offering some respite from the chill, but residents are also being cautioned about potential thunderstorms and strong winds.

The National Capital Region (NCR) will experience a notable change in weather from January 23 onwards. The IMD has forecast heavy rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms and gusty winds. Temperatures are expected to range between a maximum of 20°C and a minimum of 10°C. Thunderstorms and lightning are predicted throughout the day, with wind speeds reaching 30 to 40 kmph at intervals.

Kashmir Valley, which has been experiencing a prolonged dry spell, is likely to receive substantial snowfall soon. Snowfall may extend to the plains, including Srinagar, potentially affecting both air and road travel. Heavy snow is expected across the valley on January 22 and 23, marking the end of the recent dry spell.

Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh are also likely to see rain and thunderstorms, which may provide temporary relief from the ongoing cold, but residents are advised to stay cautious of sudden weather fluctuations.

Authorities have urged citizens in the affected regions to take precautions, especially during thunderstorms and snowfall, and to stay updated on weather advisories issued by the IMD.

This spell of active weather highlights the impact of western disturbances on North India during winter, bringing both relief from extreme cold and challenges due to heavy precipitation and strong winds.
