Banga (Punjab): The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) faced a major political setback on Sunday in connection with the controversy surrounding Nabha Kanwal Raja Sahib in Banga, after local MLA Dr Sukhwinder Kumar Sukhi resigned from his cabinet-rank position.
Dr Sukhi also stepped down as Chairman of the Punjab State Warehousing Corporation. He confirmed his resignation through a live address on social media, making his decision public. Dr Sukhi is the sitting MLA from the Banga विधानसभा constituency.
Addressing supporters during the live session, Dr Sukhi said that remarks made by Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann had deeply hurt the religious sentiments of the Sikh sangat. He stated that he was willing to sacrifice any position or post to uphold the dignity and honour of Raja Sahib.
The controversy stems from a statement made by Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann during the Maghi Mela at Sri Muktsar Sahib. During the event, the Chief Minister referred to the alleged theft of 328 copies of Sri Guru Granth Sahib from a dera located in the Banga constituency. The remarks have since triggered strong reactions and gained political momentum.
The issue has sparked widespread debate and unrest in both political and religious circles across Punjab, intensifying pressure on the ruling AAP government. Dr Sukhi’s resignation is being seen as a significant development that could further escalate the matter.
