Chandigarh: Punjab Police have been alerted to a potential threat to the life of senior Shiromani Akali Dal leader Bikram Singh Majithia following intelligence inputs pointing to possible targeting by a Pakistan-based extremist outfit.

According to official sources, the state’s intelligence wing has communicated the threat assessment to senior security officials, including the Special Director General of Police (Security) and the Additional Director General of Police (Prisons). The advisory was issued after information was shared by a central intelligence agency, prompting calls for heightened protection for the former minister.

The inputs indicate that Babbar Khalsa International (BKI), a banned Khalistani organisation operating from across the border, may be planning an attack. In view of the perceived risk, authorities have been advised to strengthen Majithia’s security cover and take preventive measures to avert any potential incident.

While Punjab Police have not publicly disclosed specific details of the threat, sources said the alert is being treated seriously given the group’s past involvement in acts of violence and targeted attacks.

Security agencies are understood to be reviewing Majithia’s existing protection arrangements and monitoring movements linked to extremist networks. Officials said further steps would be taken based on ongoing assessments and coordination with central agencies.

Neither Majithia nor the Shiromani Akali Dal has issued an official statement so far. The development comes amid heightened vigilance by security forces in the state over renewed concerns about cross-border extremist activities.
