Minneapolis: A tragic incident unfolded on Wednesday in Minneapolis, United States, when a 37-year-old woman was shot dead by an officer of the US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) during an immigration enforcement operation under the Trump administration. The shooting took place in the city’s southern area near a former immigrant market.
The incident occurred barely a mile away from the location where George Floyd was killed by police in 2020, an event that had triggered nationwide protests over racial justice. The latest shooting has once again heightened tensions in the city and raised serious questions about the conduct of law enforcement agencies.
According to officials, the woman has been identified as Reni Nicole Good, a resident of the Twin Cities region. Authorities claim the ICE officer opened fire in self-defence after the woman allegedly attempted to run him over with her car. Video footage from the scene reportedly shows that the officer was not injured during the incident, though official statements continue to maintain that the use of force was justified.
The operation was part of an intensified immigration crackdown underway in Minneapolis and neighbouring Saint Paul, where more than 2,000 law enforcement personnel have been deployed as part of federal enforcement measures.
US President Donald Trump reacted strongly to the incident, publicly backing the ICE officer involved. Sharing a video on social media, Trump claimed the woman had deliberately attacked immigration agents. He stated that the officer was forced to respond after the driver tried to flee violently, putting lives at risk.
Trump also blamed what he described as “radical left elements” for escalating tensions and referred to another woman linked to the protests as a “professional troublemaker.” He reiterated that ICE agents are carrying out their duties to ensure national security.
US Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem also defended the officer’s actions. Speaking at an event in Texas, she termed the incident “domestic terrorism” and said the woman attempted to ram agents with her vehicle. According to Noem, the firing was a necessary defensive action taken to protect both officers and civilians.
