Malerkotla (Punjab): The Punjab government has announced a public holiday in Malerkotla district on January 17 in connection with the state-level observance of Kuka Shaheedi Diwas. The holiday has been declared under Section 25 of the Negotiable Instruments Act, 1881.
Deputy Commissioner Viraj S. Tirkey said a state-level commemorative function will be held in Malerkotla to honour the sacrifice of 66 Namdhari Singhs who laid down their lives during India’s freedom struggle. The day will be observed with solemn tributes and remembrance to acknowledge their contribution to the nation.
To facilitate public participation in the event, all government and semi-government offices, private schools, educational institutions, banks and other establishments across the district will remain closed on January 17. The administration said the decision was taken to ensure that residents can attend the programme and pay homage without disruption.
The Deputy Commissioner, however, clarified that the holiday order will not apply to institutions where examinations are already scheduled or currently underway, including universities, boards, schools and colleges conducting exams as per pre-decided timetables.
