New Delhi: Delhi saw a marginal improvement in air quality on Tuesday morning, with the city’s overall Air Quality Index (AQI) recorded at 285, placing it in the “poor” category, according to data from the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB). Despite staying below the 300 mark, pollution levels across several parts of the capital continued to pose health concerns.
Monitoring stations showed uneven air quality across the city. Burari Crossing reported an AQI of 245, indicating poor conditions that remain risky for children, the elderly and those with respiratory problems. Shadipur recorded 276, while Wazirpur stood at 221, both still classified as “poor,” though Wazirpur showed comparatively lower pollution levels.
Some areas fared far worse. Chandni Chowk emerged as one of the most polluted pockets, with an AQI of 352, pushing it into the “very poor” category. Similar conditions were reported in Rohini, where the AQI touched 330, and R K Puram, which recorded 331, reflecting severe exposure to harmful pollutants.
In contrast, the area around Indira Gandhi International Airport’s Terminal 3 was relatively less polluted, registering an AQI of 193. While this falls under the “moderate” category, health experts advise continued caution, especially during prolonged outdoor exposure.
Cold weather worsening pollution levels
Meteorological officials say winter conditions are playing a major role in sustaining high pollution levels. Low temperatures, calm winds and reduced air movement are preventing pollutants from dispersing, causing them to linger close to the ground.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has indicated that cold wave conditions and still air are likely to persist, further aggravating pollution. Authorities have advised residents, particularly vulnerable groups, to limit outdoor activities during early morning and late evening hours.
Winter grips northern India
While Delhi struggles with polluted air, other northern states are dealing with intense winter conditions. Kashmir continues to experience harsh cold, with temperatures hovering around 2 degrees Celsius. The prolonged dry spell and freezing conditions are typical for the season, often leading to frozen water bodies and daily hardships for residents.
Rajasthan, though milder in comparison, is also witnessing a noticeable drop in temperatures, averaging around 11 degrees Celsius. Desert regions are experiencing chilly nights followed by relatively warmer days.
Uttarakhand, meanwhile, is seeing a gentler winter phase. Average temperatures remain close to 15 degrees Celsius, with moderate humidity levels. While hill regions face colder nights, the plains continue to enjoy comparatively pleasant daytime weather.
Overall, northern India remains under the strong influence of winter, highlighting a stark contrast between extreme cold in some regions and persistent environmental challenges, such as air pollution, in others. Authorities continue to stress the need for caution, awareness and long-term environmental responsibility during the winter months.
