Washington: US President Donald Trump and tech billionaire Elon Musk were seen together over the weekend at a private dinner in Florida, sparking renewed debate over whether the once-public feud between the two influential figures has truly come to an end.
The dinner, held Saturday night at Trump’s Mar-a-Lago residence, included First Lady Melania Trump. Musk later posted a photograph from the gathering on X, describing the evening as pleasant and hinting optimistically at the year ahead. The image quickly gained traction online, with users dissecting the meeting for signs of political reconciliation.
The interaction follows months of strained relations between Donald Trump and the Tesla and SpaceX chief. Elon Musk had been a prominent financial backer of Trump’s successful 2024 election campaign and was later appointed to lead the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE). His role ended in late May 2025 after his temporary government contract concluded.
Musk’s time in Washington was marked by controversy. DOGE faced internal backlash, most notably in February when more than 20 government employees resigned together, accusing the department of undermining public institutions and misusing technical systems. Their concerns were formally communicated to White House Chief of Staff Susie Wiles.
Tensions escalated further after Musk left his government post. He publicly criticised Trump’s signature tax and spending package—dubbed the “One Big Beautiful Bill”—using unusually sharp language. The disagreement spilled onto social media, where Musk briefly made and then deleted a controversial allegation linking Trump to the Epstein case. The White House downplayed the episode, describing it as an emotional response tied to policy differences.
Trump, in turn, suggested Musk’s frustration stemmed from the rollback of electric vehicle incentives and warned that federal contracts involving Musk-led companies could be reviewed.
Despite the sharp exchange, interactions between the two later in the year hinted at a possible thaw. They were seen greeting each other at a memorial service in September, and Musk attended a high-profile White House dinner in November that included Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.
The latest Mar-a-Lago meeting has reignited speculation about the state of their relationship. While some observers see the dinner as a clear signal of rapprochement, reactions on social media remain divided. Supporters view it as a pragmatic reset between two powerful allies, while critics question whether the underlying disagreements have truly been resolved.
For now, the photograph has done little to silence debate, suggesting that even if the dinner was cordial, public skepticism about a full reunion between Trump and Musk is far from settled.
