Thiruvananthapuram: Kerala Police carried out a major anti-narcotics operation in the early hours of New Year’s Day, arresting seven people, including an MBBS doctor and a BDS student, from a rented house in Thoppil area of Kaniyapuram near Thiruvananthapuram.

The arrests were made by teams of the Attingal and Nedumangad Rural District Anti-Narcotic Special Action Force following a tip-off received by the Thiruvananthapuram Rural Superintendent of Police. Police said the raid was conducted after fresh intelligence pinpointed the group’s hideout, leading to their capture without resistance.

Among those taken into custody were two women and an IT professional. According to police officials, the group was allegedly involved in smuggling MDMA and other synthetic drugs from Bengaluru and supplying them primarily to medical professionals and students. Investigators said the racket was being run by three habitual offenders who played a key role in sourcing and distributing the contraband.

Police revealed that the operation followed an earlier incident in which some of the accused had escaped after ramming their vehicle into a police jeep during a high-speed chase. Acting on renewed inputs, a team led by the Narcotics Deputy Superintendent of Police surrounded the premises and successfully apprehended all seven suspects.

During the raid, officers seized four grams of MDMA, 100 grams of ganja, and one gram of high-quality hybrid ganja, estimated to be worth around ₹3,000 per gram. Two cars, two motorcycles and ten mobile phones were also confiscated as part of the investigation.

The arrested individuals have been handed over to the Kadinamkulam Police Station for further questioning and legal proceedings. Police said the investigation is ongoing to identify supply networks and possible links to larger drug syndicates operating across state borders.
