Chandigarh: The Punjab government has suspended Vigilance Bureau Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Lakhbir Singh, the officer who had led the arrest of Shiromani Akali Dal leader Bikram Singh Majithia earlier this year. The action has triggered fresh political and administrative ripples in the state.

Lakhbir Singh had headed the vigilance team that arrested Majithia on June 25. According to official sources, the suspension follows allegations that the officer failed to act in a case involving a prominent social activist from Amritsar, despite a complaint being filed.

As per information reported by The Tribune, the state government has placed the Amritsar Vigilance SSP under suspension in connection with alleged irregularities in development tenders in the Ranjit Avenue area of the city. The matter reportedly involves suspected financial misappropriation running into crores of rupees, with the amount estimated at around ₹55 crore.

When contacted, SSP Lakhbir Singh said he had come to know about his suspension but was unaware of the detailed reasons behind the decision. “I have not yet received any official order. Until then, I cannot comment further,” he said.

Sources indicate that the suspension was initiated following a complaint made by a senior IAS officer, prompting the government to take disciplinary action.

Meanwhile, a case has also been registered in Amritsar against social activist Mandeep Singh Manna. Officials suggest that the developments surrounding this case may also be linked to the action taken against the suspended SSP, though no official confirmation has been issued yet.

Further administrative and legal proceedings in the matter are expected.
