Chandigarh/Patiala: Former IPS officer and retired Inspector General of Police (IGP) Amar Singh Chahal was critically injured on Monday after allegedly shooting himself at his residence in Patiala, sources said.
According to preliminary information, Chahal, who was living in Patiala following his retirement, suffered serious gunshot injuries and was rushed to Paras Hospital for emergency treatment. Hospital sources said his condition remains critical.
Sources further claimed that Chahal may have left behind a suicide note prior to the incident. The note allegedly mentions that he was cheated of nearly ₹8 crore, which pushed him into deep financial and mental distress. A copy of the note is reportedly in possession of a media team, though officials are yet to officially confirm its contents.
Senior police officers reached the spot soon after the incident and have launched an investigation to ascertain the circumstances leading to the alleged suicide attempt. Officials said all angles, including financial distress, are being examined.
Amar Singh Chahal had earlier been named as an accused in the 2015 Faridkot firing case. In February 2023, a Punjab Police Special Investigation Team (SIT) headed by ADGP L.K. Yadav filed a chargesheet in a Faridkot court, naming several political figures and senior police officials, including Chahal, in connection with the case.
Further details are awaited as the investigation continues.
