Chandigarh: Farmers in Punjab have decided to postpone their planned ‘Rail Roko’ agitation, originally scheduled for December 20, after receiving commitments from the state government.

Farmer leader Sarwan Singh Bhander stated that a meeting was held with government officials on Thursday evening, during which authorities assured that the Electricity Amendment Bill would not be implemented in Punjab. The government also clarified that smart electricity meters would not be installed in the state, addressing a major concern of the farming community.

Leaders emphasized that the decision to defer the protest is temporary and does not signify a withdrawal of their demands. The agitation will be resumed if the government fails to honor the assurances.

A follow-up meeting between farmer representatives and the government has been scheduled for December 22 to discuss remaining demands and ensure continued dialogue on key issues affecting the agricultural sector in the state.
