Auckland: A Nagar Kirtan in New Zealand faced a brief disruption on Saturday when a local group staged a protest during the religious procession, authorities and community leaders said.

The procession, which began at Gurdwara Nanaksar Thath Ishar Darbar in Manurewa, was returning to the gurdwara when around 30–35 young men reportedly arrived and blocked the route, raising slogans. A social media post connected to the incident read: “Let New Zealand be New Zealand — this is our land. This is our stand.”

Despite the interruption, the Sikh congregation remained calm, and community leaders present at the scene worked to maintain peace. Police personnel also intervened, urging both sides to avoid confrontation.

Sikh leader S. Sunny Singh praised the restraint shown, emphasizing that a measured response prevented the situation from escalating. Additional police units later arrived and ensured that the protesting group was moved aside, allowing the Nagar Kirtan to continue and conclude peacefully.

The incident highlights the importance of dialogue and calm in handling disagreements during public events, according to community representatives.
