New Delhi: The Supreme Court issued a notice to the Punjab government on the bail petition filed by senior Shiromani Akali Dal leader Bikram Singh Majithia and sought its response by January 19.

The top court’s order came during the hearing of Majithia’s plea challenging the Punjab and Haryana High Court’s decision to reject his bail application. Following the High Court’s refusal to grant him relief, the Akali Dal leader had recently approached the Supreme Court seeking bail.

During the proceedings, the apex court asked the state government to place its stand on record and listed the matter for further consideration after the submission of its reply.

Majithia’s bail plea remains under judicial scrutiny as the Supreme Court examines the legal grounds raised against the High Court’s order.
