Nanded– The Maharashtra Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has cancelled the licences of 13 medical stores and suspended the licences of 32 others in Nanded district for allegedly selling intoxicant tablets in violation of prescribed norms, officials said on Wednesday.

The action followed a special drive during which the FDA issued show-cause notices to 48 medical stores for selling intoxicant medicines without valid doctors’ prescriptions and for breaching provisions of the Drugs and Cosmetics Act, Assistant Commissioner (Drugs) A T Rathod said in an official release.

After examining the replies submitted by the concerned medical stores, the FDA found the explanations unsatisfactory and ordered the suspension of licences of 32 establishments, while permanently cancelling the licences of 13 stores. Proceedings have also been initiated against the remaining three medical stores, the release said.

The FDA further noted that in some cases, the medical stores have obtained stay orders at the government level, and action against them is currently pending before higher authorities.
