Chandigarh: The Chandigarh Administration has prohibited strikes at the Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER) for the next six months, citing the need to maintain essential public services.

The order, issued under the Haryana Essential Services (Maintenance) Act, 1974, as extended to the Union Territory of Chandigarh, declares PGIMER’s operations as an “essential service.” Officials noted that any disruption in the institute’s functioning could adversely impact public safety, healthcare services, sanitation, and overall public order in the region.

According to the notification, the Administrator of Chandigarh concluded that preventing strikes at PGIMER is in the larger public interest, ensuring uninterrupted delivery of critical healthcare. The ban applies to all employees of the institute and takes effect immediately.

The administration also stated that the measure supersedes any earlier notifications related to strike restrictions at PGIMER. The move aims to safeguard continuous medical services for the community, particularly in light of the hospital’s role as a key tertiary care facility for patients from across North India.

PGIMER, one of the country’s leading medical institutions, provides specialized healthcare, conducts research, and trains medical professionals. Authorities have emphasized that uninterrupted operations are vital to the life and health of the community.
