Amritsar, Punjab — Tension prevailed in Jandiala Guru on Saturday after a 24-year-old man died inside the local police station, prompting his family and villagers to stage a protest demanding a fair investigation. The deceased has been identified as Harman Singh, a resident of Killa village.

The family alleged that police personnel picked him up from his home the previous night without providing any reason. They claimed Harman was healthy and that the police did not recover anything objectionable from him at the time of his detention.

According to the family, when they reached the police station with food for Harman the next morning, they were informed that he had developed a fever and was being taken for medical treatment. Shortly after, they received news of his death. The family accused police officials of beating him in custody, though the police have not confirmed any such allegation.

A large number of villagers and acquaintances gathered outside the station, intensifying their protest and demanding an impartial probe.

DSP Jandiala said an investigation has already been initiated and added that the exact cause of death will be known only after the post-mortem report is released. Police officials stated that all facts would be clarified once the inquiry is complete.
