Murshidabad (West Bengal): Suspended Trinamool Congress MLA Humayun Kabir on Saturday laid the foundation stone for a mosque inspired by the design of Ayodhya’s Babri Masjid at Rejinagar in West Bengal’s Murshidabad district. The event drew thousands of people and took place under an unprecedented security deployment.

Kabir, accompanied by several clerics, cut a ceremonial ribbon as chants of “Nara-e-Takbeer, Allahu Akbar” echoed through the venue. Crowds had begun gathering from early morning to witness the ceremony.

Authorities enforced strict security measures across Rejinagar and the nearby Beldanga area, deploying large contingents of the state police, Rapid Action Force, and central forces to prevent any disturbance. Senior officials monitored the situation closely throughout the day.

Kabir was suspended from the TMC earlier this week after the party accused him of promoting “communal politics.” His announcement of the foundation-laying ceremony had already sparked political criticism, pushing the state administration to heighten vigilance.

The MLA chose December 6 for the event, a date that marks the anniversary of the demolition of the Babri Masjid in Ayodhya—adding further sensitivity to the occasion.
