Government Imposes Temporary Airfare Caps After IndiGo Flight Cancellations Trigger Price Surge

New Delhi: The government on Saturday introduced temporary caps on airfares after widespread flight cancellations by IndiGo caused ticket prices to soar on several routes.

India’s largest airline has been cancelling hundreds of flights for five consecutive days, largely due to crew-related issues. The reduced number of flights led to steep fare hikes on multiple domestic routes, prompting intervention from the Civil Aviation Ministry.

Taking note of passenger distress and market volatility, the ministry said it has invoked its regulatory powers to ensure fares remain “fair and reasonable” until flight operations normalise. “An official directive has been issued to all airlines mandating strict adherence to the fare caps that have now been prescribed,” the ministry said in a statement.

The fare limits will remain in place until the situation stabilises, though specific details of the caps were not immediately available.
