Lok Sabha Adjourned Amid Opposition Protests Over Electoral Roll Revision

New Delhi— The Lok Sabha was adjourned for the day on Monday after persistent protests by opposition parties demanding a debate on the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. The uproar disrupted proceedings repeatedly, affecting the opening day of the Winter Session, which is scheduled to have 15 sittings.

Amid the chaos, the House managed to pass a Bill to amend the GST law in Manipur after a brief discussion. The Bill, introduced by Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, seeks to replace an ordinance issued earlier. With Manipur currently under President’s rule, Parliament is exercising its authority to enact legislation on the state’s behalf.

Before the final adjournment at around 2.20 pm, the House was disrupted twice—once during the morning Question Hour and again later in the afternoon—as opposition MPs stormed the Well demanding a debate on SIR.

During the short Zero Hour, which lasted about 12 minutes, Sitharaman introduced three bills and also tabled the supplementary demands for grants for 2025–26. Among the new bills were proposals to impose excise duty on tobacco and tobacco products, along with a fresh cess on the manufacture of pan masala.
