New Delhi: A late-night crash near a popular mall in Delhi’s Vasant Kunj area claimed the life of a 23-year-old man and left two others injured after a high-end Mercedes SUV ploughed into them early Sunday, according to police.
The collision occurred around 2:30 a.m. on Nelson Mandela Marg. Officials at the Vasant Kunj North police station received a distress call alerting them to the accident and rushed to the site. Responding officers found a Mercedes G63 badly damaged, its front crushed from the impact.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (Southwest) Amit Goel said three men—two aged 23 and one 35—were discovered injured near the auto-stand area. All three reportedly worked at a restaurant inside Ambience Mall and were waiting for transportation home when the vehicle barreled into them.
The victims were transported to a nearby hospital, where one of them, identified as Rohit from Uttarakhand’s Chamoli district, was pronounced dead on arrival. The other two are being treated for their injuries.
Police have detained the driver, 29-year-old Shivam from Karol Bagh. Investigators said he had been returning from a wedding ceremony with his wife and elder brother when the crash occurred. The SUV is registered under the name of Abhishek, a friend of the accused.
“Initial findings indicate the driver lost control of the vehicle at a road diversion. The car swerved toward the auto-stand and struck the three men waiting there,” DCP Goel said.
Authorities have initiated legal proceedings, and a detailed investigation into the circumstances of the crash is ongoing.
