Chandigarh: Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann on Sunday welcomed the Union Home Ministry’s statement clarifying that the Centre is not planning any legislation related to Chandigarh’s governance structure in the upcoming Winter Session of Parliament.

Mann said the announcement has eased the concerns of Punjab residents, who were worried after recent reports hinted at possible amendments that could alter Chandigarh’s administrative status. He underlined that the city’s historic and emotional connection with Punjab cannot be compromised under any circumstances.

The Chief Minister reiterated that Punjab must be consulted before any proposal concerning Chandigarh is considered, noting that the Union Territory was built on land belonging to Punjab and has remained an integral part of the state’s identity.

“I am glad that the Central Government has decided to withdraw the Chandigarh-related Bill and not introduce it in Parliament. I hope that in the future as well, no decision concerning Punjab will be taken without consulting the people of Punjab,” Mann said in a post on X.

His comments come at a time when political tensions had escalated over fears of constitutional changes affecting the Union Territory. The Centre’s clarification is expected to calm the political atmosphere and reassure Punjab’s stakeholders.
