Amritsar: Customs officials at Sri Guru Ramdas Ji International Airport intercepted a passenger and seized a large consignment of foreign cigarettes valued at nearly ₹11 lakh. The suspect had arrived from Cambodia after a stopover in Malaysia.
Officials said they became suspicious during the passenger’s screening. A thorough inspection of his luggage led to the discovery of a sizable quantity of banned foreign-brand cigarettes, which were immediately confiscated.
The passenger was taken into custody at the airport. Investigators are now trying to determine the source of the smuggled goods and whether the consignment originated in Cambodia or was added during the Malaysia leg of the journey.
Authorities noted that smuggling attempts often rise during the festive and winter season, prompting tighter vigilance across airport checkpoints.
