Washington, DC: US President Donald Trump’s son, Eric Trump, has sharply criticised New York mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani, claiming the incoming leader “hates Indian people” and branding him a communist. Eric also accused Mamdani of harbouring anti-Jewish sentiments and wanting to arrest Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
Eric Trump said New York City risked serious setbacks under Mamdani’s leadership. “There is no place in the world that can compete against New York City, and yet you have a socialist, communist — however you wanna label this — who wants to arrest Netanyahu, hates Jews, hates Indian population, wants to defund law enforcement. You know what that’s gonna cost. It’s so sad,” he said.
Eric, who serves as executive vice-president of the Trump Organisation, argued that New York’s next mayor should prioritise “safe streets, clean streets, reasonable taxes,” adding that cities thrive when governments avoid unnecessary intervention.
Zohran Mamdani, a Democratic socialist, made history earlier this month as the first Muslim mayor of New York City and the youngest to hold the office in more than a century. He is set to take oath on January 1, according to CNN.
Mamdani’s stance on the International Criminal Court’s November 2024 arrest warrant against Benjamin Netanyahu has drawn national attention. The mayor-elect has said publicly that he would enforce the ICC warrant if the Israeli PM entered the city.
“This is a city that believes in international law,” Mamdani told CNN earlier, asserting that New York must ensure its values are reflected in its global commitments.
He reiterated that he would carry out an arrest at the airport itself should Netanyahu visit the city, saying New York must uphold international legal obligations.
