NEWARK, NJ: A tragic mass shooting in Newark’s South Ward on Saturday evening claimed the lives of two people, including a 10-year-old boy, and left three others injured, authorities said. The incident occurred on Chancellor Avenue, prompting a swift response from local police and emergency teams.

The Essex County Prosecutor’s Office reported that officers arrived at the scene around 7 PM, finding five victims suffering from gunshot wounds. The deceased were identified as a 21-year-old woman and a 10-year-old child, while the injured included an 11-year-old boy, a 19-year-old man, and a 60-year-old man — all currently in stable condition.

New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy addressed the incident on social media, urging residents to “pray for the victims and their families” amid the community’s shock.

Newark Mayor Ras J. Baraka described Saturday as “a dark and devastating day” for the city, promising a relentless pursuit of justice. “We will work tirelessly with the prosecutor’s office, state law enforcement, and federal agencies to ensure justice is served,” he said, adding an appeal to the shooter to surrender. “There is no safe place to hide.”

Authorities have yet to confirm whether a suspect has been apprehended. Investigators are seeking public assistance, asking anyone with information to contact the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office Tips Line at 1-877-847-7432. A reward of up to $10,000 has been announced for tips leading to an arrest, CBS News reported.

Residents and city officials alike are grappling with the aftermath of the shooting, as Newark mourns the loss of life and hopes for swift justice for the victims and their families.
