Lisbon— Football icon Cristiano Ronaldo has finally set a timeline for his retirement, revealing he plans to hang up his boots in “one or two years”. The 40-year-old Portuguese forward, who has scored over 950 career goals, said he wants to spend more time with his family after ending his legendary career.

In a video interaction during a Saudi-hosted global summit on tourism and investment, the Al-Nassr star joked about his earlier retirement tease, saying, “Soon for me means in 10 years… No, I’m joking.” He added, “I feel very good right now. I’m scoring goals, I still feel quick and sharp. But let’s be honest, soon probably means one or two years.”

Ronaldo, who made his professional debut with Sporting CP in 2002, extended his contract with Al-Nassr until 2027 and has hinted that the 2026 FIFA World Cup in the United States, Canada, and Mexico will likely be his last major tournament. “Definitely, yes, because I’ll be 41 at the World Cup,” he confirmed, calling the event his final appearance on football’s biggest stage.

Reflecting on his career, the five-time Ballon d’Or winner said, “I’ve given everything to football for the last 25 years. I’m proud of my records and achievements with clubs and the national team. Now it’s time to enjoy the moment.”

Ronaldo also spoke about his son, Cristiano Jr, who currently plays for Portugal’s Under-16 team, and said he hopes his son finds happiness above all. “As a father, I just want him to be happy. I’ll support him in whatever he chooses, without pressure from being my son,” he said.

With 143 international goals and an unmatched global legacy, Ronaldo’s announcement signals the beginning of the end for one of football’s most remarkable eras.
