Tampa: A late-night police pursuit in Tampa ended in devastation early Saturday when a speeding car careened into a packed bar in Ybor City, killing four people and injuring eleven others.

Authorities say the collision occurred just after 12:40 a.m. outside Bradley’s on 7th, a well-known nightclub in Tampa’s historic district that draws both locals and tourists. The silver sedan, which had been spotted earlier by an air patrol unit racing through city streets, lost control while fleeing from police and plowed into a crowd gathered outside the venue.

According to the Tampa Police Department, the Florida Highway Patrol had attempted a tactical maneuver—known as a PIT, or precision immobilization technique—to stop the vehicle but was forced to disengage as the driver accelerated toward downtown. Moments later, the car slammed into bystanders outside the bar.

Three people were pronounced dead at the scene, while a fourth succumbed to injuries at a nearby hospital. Of the eleven injured, two remain in critical condition, seven are stable, and two have already been released after treatment. Two others sustained minor injuries but declined medical assistance.

Police identified the driver as 22-year-old Silas Sampson, who is now in custody at the Hillsborough County Jail. Court filings show he faces multiple felony charges, including four counts of vehicular homicide and four counts of aggravated fleeing and eluding resulting in death or serious injury.

“This was a horrific and senseless tragedy,” said Tampa Police Chief Lee Bercaw. “Our hearts go out to the families of the victims and everyone affected by this incident.”

Mayor Jane Castor, a former police chief herself, expressed condolences to the victims’ loved ones, writing on social media that “our entire city is grieving this terrible loss.”

The crash has reignited debate over high-speed police pursuits, which have been under scrutiny nationwide. A 2023 Department of Justice-funded study urged departments to limit such chases, warning that the risks often outweigh the benefits. However, Florida’s Highway Patrol recently eased restrictions on these pursuits and the use of PIT maneuvers—tactics some experts deem “high-risk” and “controversial.”

Authorities say the investigation remains ongoing as forensic teams review surveillance footage and crash data to determine the exact sequence of events leading up to the deadly impact.
