Ludhiana – A Ludhiana court has delivered a major verdict in a high-profile double murder case that shook the city in 2022. Additional Sessions Judge Dr. Rajnish on Friday sentenced three individuals, including a woman, to life imprisonment for the brutal killing of a man and his mother-in-law.

The convicted individuals have been identified as Gopi Chand (alias Gopi), Ahmed Ansari, and his wife Kiran Devi, all residents of Satjot Nagar. In addition to the life term, the court imposed a fine of ₹10,000 on each of the convicts.

The Fatal Dispute over Alcohol

The incident dates back to September 17, 2022, in the Satjot Nagar area of Basant Avenue. According to the prosecution, the tragedy was triggered by a trivial altercation during a drinking session. The victims, 36-year-old Ravi and his 60-year-old mother-in-law Noor Jahan, lived in the same labor quarters as the accused.

While Ravi was sitting outside his room, Gopi Chand, who was also drinking nearby, reportedly began shouting abuses at him due to a long-standing personal grudge. When Ravi objected, Gopi Chand summoned his associates, Ahmed and Kiran Devi.

Brutal Assault and Aftermath

The trio launched a violent attack on Ravi using wooden sticks and iron rods. When Noor Jahan rushed to intervene and save her son-in-law, she was also mercilessly beaten by the group.

Following the attack:

  • The victims were initially treated and discharged from a hospital.

  • Their health deteriorated rapidly a few days later, leading to their admission to the Civil Hospital.

  • Both Ravi and Noor Jahan succumbed to their internal injuries during treatment.

The Judicial Verdict

The FIR was registered based on the testimony of Ravi’s wife, Raveena, who witnessed the assault. After evaluating the forensic evidence and witness statements, the court concluded that the assault was a calculated act of violence resulting from prior enmity. The judge ruled that the severity of the injuries inflicted by the rods and sticks warranted the maximum penalty for the three accused.
